The story we tell ourselves impacts our resilience

The story that we tell ourselves impacts our resilience and determines our nervous system health and our overall performance as an individual.

Yesterday, I spoke to a client who got laid off after his company is taken over. In addition to loss of job, he went through multiple job rejections while searching for a new job. Finally, he got into a new position; however in his mind, this job does not make use of his true capability, and he is feeling that every day being in that job deteriorates his confidence. The story he is running inside is starting to showing up on his confidence and resilience.

During coaching, I quickly mapped his story to how our nervous system functions. It was evident that he was on a stage called “story of protection.” When our nervous system enters this stage, it limits our capabilities and doubts our true strength. If you stay in this stage, you tend to become hypervigilant, overly sensitive to remarks, and start judging yourself and others. Biologically, being in this stage for a longer duration can make you lose your breathing rhythm and release stress hormones, leading to the third stage called the “Story of Disconnection.” If you happen to fall to the third stage frequently instead of moving up the ladder, it shows up in your bodily functioning, such as inflammation levels and digestive issues.

As a coach, I needed to bring him up the nervous system ladder to the “story of connection” stage.

We use various techniques to do this, but the quickest one focuses on releasing this negative energy and moving him from this “story of protection” to a “story of connection” through a process called “co-regulation” and making him move up the ladder. Coregulation focuses on identifying micro moments of his success together to create a safe zone.

This will help an individual to feel a sense of “connection” and his nervous system senses safety.

Resilience is an outcome of navigating the bottom two stages fearlessly to the top stage. Over a period of time with awareness coupled with courage, any individual with their cognitive capabilities, can move up to the top stage. Coregulation will soon convert into self regulation

When combined with a biological understanding of human functioning, coaching can help create more resilient individuals, physically and mentally.

Isn’t it what coaching is all about?
